Library News & Events
From Paula Altschul, Librarian Our annual First Grade Parent Connection Program is well underway, and has been updated to bring it into the 21st century. The collection consists of 76 books with activity sheets designed specifically for each book.
Hopefully you will check out these wonderful programs that have a Library connection in December and January.
New Books in the Library
There has been a request to revive a book club. You may say, “I thought we had a book club at Temple.” We did have one through the WRJ, but that has waned over the past few years. As with all things, interest is renewed when something is not available for a while.
Two events are coming up in September that will be coordinated through the Library:
As we are all aware, technology is changing so fast, it’s hard to keep up. As a result, I have decided to divest our very small collection of Books on Audiotape.
The library catalog has been online for several years, but was not connected to the Temple Emanuel website until a few weeks ago. Thanks go to the tech committee for recognizing this project, and particularly to Marty Altschul, whose diligent efforts made it happen.
Another school year is coming to a close and our Parent Connection Program for the first grade students ended in April. This year all nineteen students finished (by reading at least eight books), and received their completion certificates along with two special prizes, a coupon for a free kid’s meal at Chick-fil-A and really cool dice that light up when you throw them.

Have you heard about the Rabbi Rocketpower series of books? We’ve had Rabbi Rocketpower in Who Hogged the Hallah? A Shabbat Shabang and Rabbi Rocketpower and the Mystery of the Missing Menorahs for several years. Recently we purchased Rabbi Rocketpower and the Half-Baked Matzah Mystery: A Particularly Peculiar Passover.
Monday Lunch & Movie at Temple continues with “I Love You, I Love You Not” to be shown on March 14th.
February is movie month at Temple Emanuel. The two Monday movies are February 14th and February 28th. Cemetery Club will be shown on February 14th and Lemon Tree on February 28. Remember you may come for lunch and the movie or just attend the movie, which is shown at 12:30 pm.
There are several great programs coming up in January that will lighten your winter doldrums.
The new year has started off very nicely in the Library. We have two “newer” computers, courtesy of our generous Temple member, Bill Labovitz.
Do you love to put puzzles together? Come to the Libraryand help us connect the pieces of a 1,000 piece puzzle!
We started something this past spring that was well received, so we will try to build on the success of “Lunch and a Movie.”
Another new movie has been added to our DVD collection. The title is “Rosenstrasse.”
So, you need some good reading for the summer? A couple of movies you didn’t get to see? Don’t forget to check books and DVDs out from the Temple Emanuel Library!

02/27 -  Movies & Munchies (1:00 PM)
"39 Pounds of Love" Winner-Best Documentary Israeli Academy of Film & Television 2005 – Running time is 70 minutes Ami Ankilewitz was born a normal child, but he contracted a rare form of muscular dystrophy when quite young and was not expected to live past the age of six. Ankilewitz managed to beat the odds, and at the age of 34, he was alive and living with his disabilities despite weighing only 39 pounds and having very limited mobility. When he turned 34, he decided it was time to make a few of his long-time dreams come true. He wanted to see the United States, ride a motorcycle and see the doctor who years before had told his parents he would not live past age six. Given his fragile condition, making Ankilewitz’s wish a reality was no small accomplishment, and 39 Pounds of Love is a documentary which follows him and his crew as they worked out the logistics of bringing him to America, as well as their coast-to-coast journey to reunite him with his childhood doctor.
