TORAH WEEKEND — FEBRUARY 10 & 11, 2012

“A Journey of Faith”

SCHOLARS-IN-RESIDENCE:

BISHOP DAVID ZUBIK & RABBI AARON BISNO

The Rabbi William Sajowitz Endowment Fund of Temple Emanuel of South Hills, together with Beth El Congregation of South Hills Men’s Club, and the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh-South Hills, bring you Torah Weekend with special Scholars-in-Residence. A grant from the Men of Reform Judaism Congregational Interfaith Mini-Grant Program made possible by funding of the Jewish Chautauqua Society, MRJ’s interfaith education project, and a grant from PAJC C-JEEP Program also helped to support this weekend.

This will be the first time in the 38 year history of Torah Weekend that our congregations will present an interfaith program inviting both the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese and the Greater Pittsburgh Jewish Community. Our weekend will focus on Bishop Zubik’s and Rabbi Bisno’s participation in theNovember 2010 pilgrimage of peace with twenty-eight Catholics and Jews. This interfaith delegation shared an eight-day journey to the Eternal City of Rome and the Holy Land of Israel. In the course of their travels, they shared an audience with the Pope, met with Vatican leaders and emissaries, sat with family members of Israeli captive Gilad Shalit, learned alongside Jewish scholars and toured both Jewish and Christian holy sites.

Bishop David Zubik

David Zubik, born in Sewickley and raised in Ambridge, entered St. Paul Seminary and Duquesne University where he received his undergraduate degree. He obtained a Master’s in Divinity from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1975. After serving as Bishop of Green Bay, he returned to Pittsburgh in 2007 to lead the Diocese. Rodef Shalom honored the Bishop with its inaugural “Pursuer of Peace” Award.

Rabbi Aaron Bisno

Rabbi Bisno has been the senior spiritual leader of Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh since 2004. Rabbi Bisno was ordained in 1996 at HUC-JIR in Cincinnati. In 2011, Rabbi Bisno received two distinguished awards, the “Church Alive! Award” and the “Benemerenti Medal,” during a special Catholic Mass at St. Paul Cathedral for his enrichment in interfaith dialogue and respect between the Jewish and Catholic communities.

The Vokols

Established in 2006, the Vokols were the University of Pittsburgh’s first a cappella group dedicated to both Hebrew and American popular music. They are now supported by the Hillel Jewish University Center. This

16-member group includes students from throughout the USA and are in their 6th year performing on and off campus.
